Crochet and Fabric Keyrings

As I mentioned in my previous post I had received two lovely presents, in return I made the two ladies crochet/fabric keyrings. As they are filled with lavender they could also be used as a pomander for your wardrobe, I have a few of these myself.

The fabric is from Harlequin, a small offcut from the Scrap Store, the lace is vintage and was made by my great great grandmother. I decided to use a mauve colour merino wool to match the flowers on the fabric. I lightly stuffed the holder and filled with english lavender which I had grown in my allotment.

The double flower pattern I have used is from Attic 24

Crochet Hook Wrap and Fabric Flower Brooch

I have met so many nice people at Ulverston Scrap Store, it's always great to chat away to people who have the same craft interests, you can bounce ideas off one another.

Two members from the Scrap Store brought me gifts they had made using items from the Store, I was completely overwhelmed, it's so lovely to receive an unexpected present and I feel very lucky.

They both know that I love to crochet and made me a crochet hook wrap and a flower brooch. Very talented ladies.

So happy right now !!

Mini break to York

I went on a mini break to York recently we stayed at the Crook Lodge Hotel which is just five minutes walk to the town centre. The rooms were lovely, breakfast was great and they have private off road parking which is definitely a huge bonus. Brian, the host is very nice and has loads of helpful information on where to eat and visit.

We had some amazing meals while we were in York and I always like to try something new wherever I go. On one occasion we decided to try The Lamb and Lion in High Petergate, I ordered roasted wood pigeon with caramelised carrots and layered thyme potato. It was gorgeous and definitely something I would eat again.

Hot purple figs, plums, apricots marinated in mulled wine with a clotted cream and apricot purée and homemade ginger biscuit.. gorgeous!

On the walk back to our hotel we went past a lovely shop window which had a large decoupage stag, this reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend at the Ulverston Scrap Store, she mentioned she was going to decoupage a little cow with Liberty fabric (which she has recently done and it looks fantastic).

To get to our hotel you can walk through the Museum Gardens, there are so many squirrels, my husband and I could not resist feeding them, they are so cheeky.

I also managed to find a bit of yarn bombing on my travels are well :)

A bit of everything

I have been doing a little bit of everything this week. I started a new crochet project a charcoal grey and mustard shawl, I will post photographs once finished. The only problem is everytime I start to crochet my dog Tilly thinks the ball of yarn is a pillow, she is not too happy when it keeps moving.

In between doing this I have been making a few things for Ulverston Scrap Store, I volunteer at the Scrap Store once a week, Thursday's between 2pm and 5pm. I try to make things using items from the store to give people a few ideas on what you can make. I have made two items this week, the first one was pin wheels using sample wallpaper pieces.

The second project was a fridge magnet made using tin lids from the store.

I have also been making lots and lots of jam, redcurrant, blackberry, blackberry and elderberry, damson, plum, crab apple. It's been a great year for fruit and vegetables in the UK, much better than last year. I have just harvested all of my sturon white onions and boltardy beetroot, yellow and green beans, pointed cabbages. It's the first year I have ever grown turnips and I have been pleased with the results. The only items I have in the allotment left are cabbages, turnips and green and purple sprouts. It's a good job they are not ready to harvest yet as I'm rapidly running out of storage space.

Wallpaper Wreath

As I mentioned in my last post I volunteer at Ulverston Scrap Store. I brought a few items from the store home to play around with and decided to make a Wallpaper Wreath. They are very easy to make, most of the materials you can get at the store with the exception of a glue gun and a couple of diamantés.

Materials Used

Three pages of wallpaper samples
Two pieces of lino samples
Tin lid

The plain and patterned blue wallpaper I cut into 3.75 inch squares and the mustard colour I cut into 3 inch squares. I then individually rolled them into cones from left to right and glued them along one side using my glue gun. I ended up with 12 cones each of the plain and blue patterned paper and 16 cones of mustard paper.

I covered the largest piece of lino with blue wallpaper and glued first of all the plain and patterned blue cones all the way around using my glue gun. When this was done I cut a circle of mustard wallpaper and covered the inside lid of the tin, used glitter around the edge of the tin and glued the tin lid to the centre of the lino. When this was done I then glued all the mustard cones with the points just and so tucked underneath the tin lid.

I had enough of each colour wallpaper left to make a Kusudama Origami Flower, please see the link at the end of my post on how to make these. I then glued this onto the centre of the tin.

To finish the wreath off I then made two holes at the top of the smallest piece of lino and then glued this piece to the back of the largest piece of lino. I attached some wire to either side of the holes to hang it up.

Ulverston Scrap Store

I have recently started volunteering at Ulverston Scrap Store every Thursday, it's a fantastic place if you're into crafts. If you haven't heard of USS before here is a little information for you....

USS is a small charity set up to provide clean, cheap, safe scrap materials to our members for their creative projects. It's open to everyone individuals, groups, clubs, brownies/guides/scouts, community groups, workshops, schools.

Individuals pay £5 and for that you get an empty carrier bag to fill with whatever takes your fancy. There are also group memberships available, please click on their website link at the bottom of this page for more information. There is a lot to choose from e.g., fabric, card, paper, wallpaper samples, curtain rings, folders, cardboard, zips, foam, tin lids, small containers, bottles, carpet samples, tile samples, there is so much stuff.

USS is open on Thursdays from 2pm until 5pm and Saturdays from 10.00am until 12.30pm. The entrance is on Cavendish Street, Ulverston. It's the first door on your right as you enter the street from County Square. The door has USS posters pinned on it, the door will be locked but there is a doorbell and someone will come and let you in. Why not pop in for a chat and a look around.
